TKC Three Member States making progress on improving services along the Corridor

The 11th Joint Law Enforce Operation in Swakopmund kick started in a high note with Three Member State tabling reports on their National Trans Kalahari Committees on progress made per country on the implementation of the signed Memorandum of Understanding.

The national committees in the Three Member States, are set to facilitate and fast track the implementation of Memorandum of Understanding, and further to mobilize stakeholders, dikgosi and communities living along the Corridor.

In their presentations, countries highlighted their achievements in improving efficiency and safety measures along the Corridor and further outlined challenges they experience.

Since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), by the three countries in 2003, the member states worked very hard to improve efficiencies along the TKC through the harmonisation of Cross Border Transactions and Customs Procedures.

The relations have further contributed to and promoted trade facilitation through transport efficiency by simplifying and harmonizing the requirements and controls governing the movement of goods and persons in view to reduce transportation costs and transit times.

In this operation, South African is represented by more than 35 delegates from different key stakeholders on law enforcement and road safety, (RTMC – National Traffic Police, JB Marks Local Municipality, Road Traffic Infringement Agence (RTIA), North West Provincial Traffic, Ramotshemoiloa Local Municipality, Road Accident Fund.

The delegation is led by the Trans Kalahari Corridor National Committee, Mr Suebel Mmono, who called for reassessment of these operations.
“We need to look back into the journey undertaken since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in 2003.
“We need to remember that cleaning of criminal elements and encouraging compliance on the Corridor remains our responsibility,” said Mmono, who acknowledged the presence of the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management Head of Department, Ms Botlhale Mofokeng.

The TKC is a road network spanning approximately 1900 kilometers across the territories of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
